Why is my CCP320 filter getting dirty so fast?

If your Clean & Clear Plus 320 needs cleaning far more often than it used to, something upstream of the filter is usually the cause. A filter that clogs quickly is often doing its job against a load it should not be facing. Here are the common reasons, from most to least likely, and what each one points to.

The cartridges are worn out

The most common cause. As media breaks down, a cartridge holds less and clogs faster, so shorter runs between cleanings are often the first sign a cartridge is near the end, not a sign the pool is dirtier. If cleaning no longer buys you much time, the cartridges likely need replacing rather than another rinse.

Water chemistry is off

Unbalanced water is a leading cause of fast clogging. High calcium hardness or high pH can cause scale that loads the filter. A pool fighting an algae bloom dumps organic matter into the filter continuously. If the filter is clogging fast and the water looks cloudy or green, the chemistry is the place to look before blaming the filter.

The filter was cleaned improperly

Cartridges cleaned only with a quick hose-off accumulate oils, lotions, and fine debris deep in the pleats that a rinse does not remove. Over time this buildup makes the cartridge clog faster and faster. A periodic chemical soak, following the cartridge cleaning instructions, clears what rinsing leaves behind. A cartridge that clogs quickly despite frequent rinsing may just need a proper soak.

Heavy load on the pool

A pool under heavy use, heavy swimmer counts, nearby trees dropping debris, wind-blown dust, or runoff after rain, simply puts more into the water for the filter to catch. If the fast clogging lines up with a season or an event, the load is the cause and the filter is keeping up as designed.

Undersized or mismatched cartridges

If someone previously fitted the wrong cartridge, one that is close in size but not the correct 80 square foot CCP320 part, the filter has less effective area than it was designed for and clogs faster. This is worth checking if the fast clogging started after a cartridge change. Confirm the cartridges are the correct part for a Clean & Clear Plus 320.
