OEM vs aftermarket pool filter cartridges
OEM cartridges come from the filter's original maker. Aftermarket cartridges are built by other manufacturers to the same fit and specification. Here is what actually differs between them and what does not.
When a pool filter cartridge wears out, you can buy the replacement from the company that made the filter (OEM, original equipment manufacturer) or from an independent maker (aftermarket). Pentair is the OEM for the Clean & Clear Plus line. Unicel, Pleatco, Filbur, and others are aftermarket. The choice comes up on every replacement, and the marketing around it is often louder than the actual difference. This guide lays out what separates the two honestly, including where OEM has a real edge.
What OEM and aftermarket have in common
For a cartridge to fit and function, it has to match the original on a fixed set of physical specifications: length, outer diameter, end cap opening size, and the filtration area the housing was designed around. A cartridge that matches these fits the same and flows the same. These are not proprietary secrets. They are published dimensions, which is why multiple manufacturers can and do produce equivalents of the same cartridge. A Unicel C-7470 and a Pentair R173573 are the same size cartridge for the same filter, made by different companies.
So the baseline is: a correctly specified aftermarket cartridge fits identically to OEM. Fit is not where the two differ, assuming the aftermarket part is made to the right dimensions. That assumption is the thing to check, and the rest of this guide is about how.
Where they can actually differ
The real differences are in materials and construction, not fit. These are the variables worth understanding:
Filter media. The pleated fabric is where filtration happens. Media is rated by weight (commonly 4 oz polyester on this class of cartridge) and by construction. Denser or higher-grade media can trap finer particles and hold up longer between cleanings. This varies between manufacturers, OEM and aftermarket alike. Some aftermarket media meets or exceeds OEM; some is thinner to hit a lower price. Media weight is a spec worth reading.
End caps and core. The plastic end caps and the internal support core determine how well the cartridge holds its shape under water pressure and how well it resists cracking over seasons of cleaning. Cheaper construction here is a common way costs get cut, and it shows up as caps that crack or cores that collapse before the media is worn out.
Pleat count and bonding. More pleats mean more surface area in the same envelope, which affects capacity. How the pleats are bonded affects whether they stay evenly spaced or bunch together in use. These are manufacturing quality differences that do not show on a spec sheet but affect service life.
None of these differences are inherent to OEM versus aftermarket as categories. A well-made aftermarket cartridge can match OEM on all of them, and a cheap one will not. The category label tells you less than the actual materials do.
What NSF/ANSI 50 certification means
NSF/ANSI 50 is a standard for materials used in pool and spa equipment, including filter cartridges. A cartridge certified to it has been tested by an independent body against defined material-safety and performance criteria. It is a meaningful, verifiable signal because it comes from a third party rather than the manufacturer's own marketing.
Both OEM and aftermarket cartridges can carry NSF/ANSI 50 certification. When comparing two cartridges, whether one is certified is a more useful question than whether it is OEM. Certification is a floor you can check; the OEM label is a brand, not a test result.
Where OEM has a real edge
To be fair about it, OEM carries two genuine advantages. First, warranty: some filter or equipment warranties are written to require OEM parts, and using aftermarket can affect coverage. If your system is under warranty, read the terms before deciding. Second, guaranteed spec match: because the OEM made the housing, their cartridge is by definition dimensioned for it, with no risk of a near-miss. With aftermarket, that match depends on the maker having specified it correctly, which is exactly why verified dimensions matter.
Neither of these makes OEM filter better at filtering. They make it the safer default when warranty terms demand it or when you cannot verify an aftermarket part's specs.
How to judge an aftermarket cartridge
If you are buying aftermarket, the label on the box matters less than these:
Published dimensions that match your cartridge exactly: length, outer diameter, opening size. If a seller does not publish these, that is a reason for caution. Media weight stated plainly, so you can compare like for like. NSF/ANSI 50 certification, which is checkable. And a clear cross-reference showing which OEM and brand part numbers the cartridge replaces, so you can confirm the fit yourself rather than taking it on faith.
A cartridge that publishes all of this is one you can evaluate. A cartridge sold on price alone with no specs is one you cannot. The distinction that matters is not OEM versus aftermarket, it is verifiable versus unverifiable.
